Old Fashioned Love, GAG!! Choke!!

These are the covers from "Romance Comics" 1959 and 1960 respectively. You can't find love for 10 cents these days!!! And I'll tell you....I'm glad we've come a LONG way from the romance senarios that are depicted in these volumes.

Here's one of the examples:

A woman who gets turned down twice because she mentions...*gasp*, marriage and the guys can't get away from her fast enough. (literally, one jumped out of horse and buggy in a park) She becomes a Man Hater!!!...grrr...Feel her roar... *roll the eyes here folks* The happy ending is with the very first guy who dumped her ..."I was a young fool" "Oh, " she says" I was childish too.." Come ON Woman!!! So what happens? He makes a move to kiss her, she rebuffs him, he gets a scowl on his face and turns away.. Immediately she jumps up..."Wait Johnny, Maybe I was wrong too..." SHE WAS WRONG? For being angry that he dumped her and now she won't let him kiss her after 3 years of absence and one hour back in her company????
Thank goodness our romance Heroines have a LOT more backbone...you think??? She should have made HIM grovel and beg her forgiveness.....let him hang for a bit.....

One other "story" was about a young woman who married but wasn't quite thrilled with all the housework she had to do. New DH, of course, was "understanding" at first, but then started eating out more and working later. It wasn't until she "grew up", cleaned the house to his "satisfaction" and had the meal ready for him when he walked into the door that she was the recipient of the love that was his to give. The title was "The Awakening".

Oh sure, the awakening of married servitude they meant. Give me heroines of Gena Showalters, Awaken Me Darkly, or LKH's Anita Blake. Those women would have made mincemeat of the guys in these storys.

Oh, the one titled His Lips Or None..well that was geeky.
Jock and sweatheart going out in college. Jock needs tutoring and the tutor, "Art' is now tagging along everywhere the jock goes because Mr. Jock needs to be tutored between practices and such. Art's become the good friend. *sense where this is going, don't you?*
Roby, the girl, (what kind of name is Roby anyway?) believes it's His lips or none, meaning Hank the Jock. But, suddenly there appears a "childhood sweatheart" from Hank's past that isn't so childish anymore but the real thing.(really? Can a jock know the real thing?) Do you think he tells Roby? Nope, just goes along with the new girl. One day Roby has to run and CATCH him to say.."what's wrong?". Oh, gee, been meaning to tell you , you've been a lot of fun but I never really asked you to marry me ....." *sigh* and so it goes. Roby cries, mopes in room, Art comes to visit her...( IN HER BEDROOM!)and takes her out to dinner to "make her feel better", which OF COURSE she does. Then he announces, that he loves her! Loves her with all his heart..kisses her and this "strange glow" she feels inside suddenly must be TRUE LOVE!! WOW! Who knew? They have a HEA.

Like I said....We've come a long way, now we kick-A$$!!

Ciao

OMG! These are the so lame. I am glad that womens lib finally took hold. Where are you getting these? They are funny. Especially to think that these were considered ROMANCE.

I've wondered what it is that people will categorize today's romance as when it is "dated". Hmm...

Excuse me while I, uh, make the bed.

Well, Brandy, my Mom just smiles and doesn't really say much. "That was a long time ago",
I guess now they seem really corny...so what else is there to say???

Gee, Annalee, going to make your bed huh???
You crack me up!

Hopefully, romance like what you write will be timeless. I plan on keeping mine for a long time. I won't have daughters to pass them to however. Maybe future DIL's??
Whoa...weird thought.

You bet, Bonnie!
Changed for the better for sure.
Housework is NOT the measure of a woman.
Thanks for dropping by!

Welcome gangadhar!
Thanks for stopping by.
Appreciate your kind comments about my post.

Re: becoming a writer.....I'm taking baby steps. I'm also trying to convince my local library to create a writer's workshop for adults. They have tons of stuff for the youth of the town, but not beyond that.
So yes, I hope to realize my dream. Even if it is only a short story...it would still be an accomplishment.
So, who knows, maybe wishes DO come true!

I Tried a Book Out of My Comfort Zone

Sometimes, reading out of my comfort zone is ... well, uncomfortable. The blurb of the book sounded rather interesting. The Fate of Mercy ...
