During the Spanish/American War and the Civil War,troops were housed here, but never in the fort proper, but on the outskirts. The fort was in contruction for almost 25 years and was never finished! <BR/>Yet it is an incredible structural beast. Stone masons were imported from Ireland and England because they knew how to work granite. When Europeans come over to visit, they say the fort "reminds them of the castles back home", gee I wonder why? *grin*<BR/>I think that fact is cool.
