Have you ever listened to something time and again and just enjoyed the music, the beat, the singer's voice but yet not really listen????
One day, you listen to the same beloved song, perhaps in another venue.
Allow the following "for instance" ; you download the music to your computer, put on your headphones and get a one on one experience with the song that you've not experienced before.
The words, crisp, clear and undiluted by the world noise around you, are feeding directly into your ear. You focus more than you ever have before and your brain is jerked awake into an awareness.
The song that you knew....or thought you knew, takes you on a mental journey to a different place.
Such is the case with one of my favorite James Bond movie theme songs, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN.
Do you remember????
Christopher Lee played Scaramanga,
And the theme song was sung by..Lulu. (if memory serves)
Do you remember what Scaramanga liked to do before he shot his mark?
Well, I never had any misconceptions about the movie. It was one of the good ones, worth watching over and over. The theme song was one that I listened to and liked very much. Two weeks ago, I developed a greater appreciation for its lyrics.
It seemed so innocent!!
Well, as innocent as anything could be when it concerns our favorite 007 agent.
Allow me to provide focus for my revelation. It came from two sentences.
"Love is required, whenever he's hired. He comes just before the kill. "
No one can catch him, no hit man can match him for his million dollar skill.
One golden shot means another poor victim,
has come to a glittering end,
for a price he'll erase anyone,
(if you want to get rid of someone), the man with the golden gun will get it done,
he'll shoot anyone.
With his golden gun.
His eye may be on you or me,
who will he bang,
we shall see."
Whoa. It provides a rich innuendo. A sexual feel. And it got past the censors!!!
"He comes just before the kill"? When it is taken and viewed from this new perspective, the phrase just takes my eyebrows on an upward journey of astonishment.
Imagine me making a big "O" with my mouth, as I sat in shock from the ramifications of my new interpretation of the lyrics!!!
Originally, I assumed that "who will he bang" meant, who will be his next assassination target. Now, on this new level, I hear; who will be his next female conquest to get him "in the mood" for completing his mission. "His eye may be on You or Me".....makes you think, doesn't it??? Like I said, "Don't presume innocence"...
Am I the only one who has discovered this????
Am I the only one who this has ever happened to??
I really hope you can make me feel like I'm not alone in this .
Thanks.

OH, Gangadhar, I agree Totally!!!
Its great that you think so too!
The song was my inspiration for this post.
Like you said, "completely sexist, but Bond's supposed to be."
I just didn't expect the song to be "over the top" as well!
I'm glad you like my subject matter today. Bond has a special place in many people's hearts.
TTFN!!
The innuendo in that song is so strong that you can TASTE it.
Ah!
So speaks the expert. LOL.
Thanks, My Mouth.
Yow! Those lyrics certainly slipped past me! Wow!
Now for the controversial bit: I actually liked Timothy Dalton's Bond. He was an assassin. He was direct, and brutal. I dug that.
I personally accept that each actor who played Bond, brought something unique to the character.
The first movie with Tim Dalton, was good. In fact, I bought the tape when it came out. I was not too crazy about the second, however. Something about it just didn't connect ....but that's my opinion.
I think that Roger Moore over stayed his tenure as Bond for the last 2 movies. Too farcical.
But no matter who...the music was good (if controversial), the women were babes, and the cars and gadgets were drool-worthy. To think, some of those are now commonplace. Go figure.
Happy to see you here, Avindair. Thanks for your comment!
Like you, I think Sean Connery was the ultimate Bond. Brosnon seemed to bring that elusive, yet sexy quality. So he was my 2nd favorite. I didn't like Timothy Dalton as Bond and dislike Roger Moore in ANYTHING. The music just lasts longer than any memory of actual movie.
What do you think of the new Bond?
The odd thing, Brandy, is that I've yet to see the new Bond....
I have NO idea who he is.
You mean, you didn't like Roger Moore in The Saint? Oh, he was sublime in that series!!!!
I loved the episode with the Lock Ness Monster...
The theme song for The Saint was great too!!
I see Sean and automatically think "Bond"! LOL LOVE your thoughts on the lyrics to the song. Hmmm....what WAS the REAL meaning? LOL
Thanks, Robin!
As far as the meaning....only Lulu and the song writers know for sure. But, with 007, can it be that far off???
*wink*
You comment made me smile, Thanks!
I'm a Sean as Bond girl. No one comes close. However, I did like Dalton as Bond, but my favorite was the second film - it was much closer to the original Bonds with very few gadgets and lots of Bond getting himself out of tricky situations by his wit.
As for songs, I have a great example of this. Randy Travis had a song out called "What'll you do about me." I can't remember all of the words, but here's a verse and the chorus:
Verse: "What in the world are you going to do, when someone comes over to visit with you, and I'm on the porch with a 2x2? What'll you do about me?
Chorus: You can call the lawyers you can call the fuzz, sound the alarm, wake the neighbors up. Ain't no way to stop a man in love. So what'll you do about me?"
The song has a really peppy beat, and I used to drive along, singing and tapping my fingers on my steering wheel. Then, one day after OJ Simpson went on trial and all the details of that started coming out, I was listening to this song, and I realized what the words really meant. This was a sick, demented song about a man who wouldn't let go and was going to stalk his ex. It was OJ's theme song! I was so appalled that I had totally overlooked the meaning because the rhythm and music blinded me to the words.
I've used this in my composition classes as an example of how much goes by us that we don't really pay attention to, and how easy it is to fool us if things are wrapped up in pretty packages or sound nice.
I am not surprised at the lyrics to that theme tune, as Roger Moore's days as Bond were the most innuendo-ridden of them all.
Evidence:
Final lines of Moonraker:
Assorted high-ranking officials see a naked Bond floating in a space shuttle with an equally naked attractive female scientist.
Q: "Bond! What are you doing?"
M: "Looks like he's attempting re-entry."
Final line of From Russia With Love:
Bond discovered in flagrante with an attractive female Russian spy.
Q: "Bond! What are you doing?"
B: "Keeping the British end up sir."
About the song Kelli mentioned - it sounds similar to The Police's "Every Breath You Take." Everyone thinks it's a sweet song about being in love.
It isn't. It's a stalker saying he will never leave you alone.
A while ago I got caught out by a song with dodgy lyrics. I bought the album "Permission to Land" by the British band The Darkness. (For those who don't know The Darkness are a sort of deliberate Spinal Tap rip-off. Very glam rock, very British and very funny.)
Anyway, one of the songs on Permission to Land is called "Growing On Me".
I rarely listen closely to lyrics in songs, so I always thought the song was about a man falling in love with someone, but is trying to resist. (If you haven't heard it, you can listen to it thanks to Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/appfq).
The lyrics to "Growing On Me" goes like this:
I can't get rid of you
I don't know what to do
I don't even know who is growing on who
'Cos everywhere I go you're there
Can't get you out of my hair
Can't pretend that I don't care - it's not fair
I'm punished for all my offences
I wanna touch you but I'm afraid of the consequences
I wanna banish you from whence you came
But you're part of me now
And I've only got myself to blame
Chorus: You're really growing on me
(Or am I growing on you?)
You're really growing on me
(Or am I growing on you?)
Any fool can see
Sleeping in an empty bed
Can't get you off my head
I won't have a life until you're dead
Yes, you heard what I said
I wanna shake you off but you just won't go
And you're all over me but I don't want anyone to know
That you're attached to me, that's how you've grown
Won't you leave me, leave me alone
(Chorus)
Then I read an article by a music journalist that said The Darkness should be given an award for making a hit single about....
(Wait for it....)
(This is gross....)
about genital warts.
I thought "No."
Then I remembered the song's lyrics.
Then I thought "Bloody hell!"
If you don't believe me, read them again, keeping genital warts in mind...
Richard!!!
You've blown me away!!!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
I've never heard of The Darkness.
And to make a song about, G.Warts..and yes, you're right..It CAN fit into the song...well, I have to say...actually, I'm not sure WHAT to say! LOL
Thanks for an Off-the-chart chuckle!!
Love your sense of humor :-)
And you DO know your Bond....*wink*
Kelli!
I wish I could attend one of your classes. I think I'd be impressed.
You're right, those are some sickly focused lyrics. 2X4 = Ouch!
It sounds like I'm not the only one that sneaky lyrics creep up and grab.
I am SO relieved!!!!
And , now, amazed at the number that ARE out there.
Wow.
ROTFLOL! Hilarous. Funny how we'll hum along to songs with great beats and really have no clue what the lyrics are all about until we actually hear something about the group, or get slapped upside the head.
So true, Robin, so true.
Makes for a great post, though, heh?
*grin*
*raises hand* Sean Connery here too! Never noticed those lyrics, but that particular movie isn't one I've seen enough to have caught. I like how Mike Myers pokes fun at some of this stuff in the Austin Powers series.
Oh yes! Annalee, Austin Powers is in a league by himself.
Its amazing how popular Sean is...not surprising, mind you...just amazing..
Thanks for popping by!
LOL. One of my brother's calls Mike Myers a "comic genious". I really do like Spaceballs for that same reason I like Austin Powers. I enjoy spoof comedy.
