Nostalgia for Ren and Stimpy

The Ren & Stimpy Show" (1991) [TV-Series 1991-1996]

Do you remember??? Recently, I've been revisiting a fun time in my life by rewatching my videos of Ren and Stimpy...a frenetic Chihuahua and a stupid but loveable cat. Right now everyone LOVES Spongebob Squarepants. I admit to watching it myself. I believe the first venture that embraced true stardom with innocent but tasteless juvenile humor was Ren and Stimpy. I don't watch the Simpsons. Never have. If you can believe it. There's nothing innocent about Bart Simpson. He was born with a lemon in his mouth...hence his yellow ocher color.

RE: R& S:
I enjoyed the cast of characters.... I re-introduce:
Muddy Mudskipper!

I even remember his theme song!

Speaking of theme songs... I loved the Happy Happy Joy Joy song.

For my anniversary in the 90's, on of my family members gave me this same little figurine as a gift. I was THRILLED!! Aren't they cute? I still have it!!

You can never have enough Happy or JOY, right?

Then there is my favorite ...Powdered Toast Man with Vitamin F!!!! I wanted to post a pic of him, but Blogger went into coniptions every time I tried. In fact, it's gone 'down!" oh well,
maybe another day. Anyway:

I love his line"It may be filled with vitamin F, but no one said it makes you smart!"
Do you remember what the "F" Stood for???......LOL... it was better hearing Vitamin F versus Vitamin Fart!!.. *giggle*..it still gets me chuckling. I recollect that he flew by inflating his "buttocks" and when he had to land..he....well.".let it out" Thats why Vitamin F was so useful.

My favorite line is Ren, mad at Stimpy..for who knows what and he calls him a
"Sick Little Monkey!"

A scene from a typical R & S moment:

Quotes: [Ren is trying out Stimpy's Stay-Put Socks]
Ren: Say, these are great. How do they work?
Stimpy: They're filled with glue. [glue oozes out of the top of the socks]
Stimpy: Stay right there. I'll get the Stay-Put hat and raincoat.
Ren: [shouts] You filthy swine. I will kill you!

Ladies and Gentlemen...what you've just read is from the beginning of the birth of the Happy Happy Joy Joy song!!!!!!
I found the most Excellent Site that actually has the dialog of the entire episode. I couldn't believe my good luck!! I was SO tempted to copy the whole darn thing here, but I'd probably throw blogger out of whack..so, I give you a link....
BIRTH OF HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!!!

Please share in my warped playfulness.

I've now passed the legacy off onto another generation in my family. We can quote verbatim during the show, all the dialog. Oh, to share such wealth!!

Speaking of which,, if you've ever had the fortune of watching this in the early 90's, I would be most pleased if you could share what you liked, loved or even Hated about the show.
Let's face it.... R & S wasn't and isnt' for everyone.

The best use of having my kids watch Ren and Stimpy was the episode where Ren refused to brush his teeth. I have made my kids watch it so they understand the worst case scenario of neglecting their oral hygiene. In that episode, Ren was the stupid one and Stimpy the cat was smart..he brushed Every Day! And you know what? We ALL went to the dentist today and we ALL got a clean bill of health. NO CAVITIES!!
Is that Awesome or What???

Remember to brush and floss folks! Its a good thing.

My wish for you today is that all your tests, whether they be school, MD appointments or relationships, also pass with flying colors!!
Have a great weekend!

I dated my husband to Ren and Stimpy.

How about:
What rolls down stairs
alone or in pairs
and into your neighbor's dog?
It fits on your back,
It's good for a snack,
Everyone knows it's log.
It's log, it's log,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good."

You. Are. Nuts.
That said, I barely remember this show (*ducks* don't throw things).I DO remember the tooth brushing episode.
My Dh is a fan of Beavis & Butthead, and scary as it may seem, I even find them a little funny. I don't watch The Simpsons, either. I WILL still watch Scooby Doo and Pink Panther. (My favorite Scooby is the one with Phyllis Diller.)

Mel!
Woohoo! You have ALL The Words!!!!
Oh no....Now I can't get the tune out of my head...*LOL!*
That is so cool about you and your DH!
Awesome memories!

Naw, Brandy, I won't throw things at ya! No one threw cyper-pies at me yesterday, so I'll pass along the cheerful restraint.

Beavis...Ungh! Hated that show. Worse, I hated people who IMITATED that infernal nasal hack they mistakenly accepted for a laugh. Argh!
However, Scooby Doo is a classic. I STILL watch it. Even the new ones...some of the music is quite fun! Pink Panther... that still on somewhere?? I remember watching that too.
But I still, if we have to mention cartoons...LOVE Johnny Quest. Hmmm, I feel another blog post comin' on! LOL

Oh my god. I realize that I'm new here, but I'm SO excited to read about Ren and Stimpy. I was obsessed with that show. It was sort of a father/daughter bonding time when I was growing up. My father and I have an admittedly odd relationship. It's hard to choose a favorite episode, but I'll have to stick to the original six as my favorite series of episodes. Space Madness, Robin Hoek (with his beloved Maid Moron and her "silken hair")....so good. I love that the soundtrack also consisted of the same six classical pieces EVERY SINGLE SHOW. I'm so glad that there are other crazed fans out there (and yes I know all of the words to ALL of the silly little songs)! Thank you!

Woohoo Alison!!
And, Hello there fellow Ren and Stimpy fan!!

You have the SOUNDTRACK!!??!
That is incredible. I never knew there WAS one out there. Darn.
Now my music files are incomplete, LOL.

You 're NOT the only father/daughter relationship to build on Ren and Stimpy. A guy I used to work with, Tony, was the same with his daughter. They used to make mobiles and hang them from her ceiling and wore the shirts and all things Ren and Stimpy. So, I don't think its strange at all!! I saw first hand how wonderful that must have been...well..second hand, as he would fill us in....
Thanks for sharing Alison, and So happy to see you here. Stop by anytime....

OK, I had an transpositional brain moment.
Sorry Kara!!
I focused on your last name instead of your first...
How bizarre is that????
KARA!! Kara!!! By Jove, I think I've got it!!

Ren and Stimpy was so much better than Beavis and Butthead. I too love Robin Hoek. The show was so oddball and just tasteless enough to make me laugh. One of my favorite lines in CLUELESS is when Cher says, "Ren and Stimpy are way existential." I remember saying things like that so people wouldn't think I was a freak for watching cartoons as an adult!! Now I don't care. ;-)

Other favorite toons: Thundercats! (Ho!!) Animaniacs (especially the songs). Definitely Scooby Doo (but no Scrappy or Baby Scooby Doo - give me the originals). Pinky and the Brain. Freakazoid. The Tick.

Now, my favorite is Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Adult Swim. Masta Shake is my fav character. He cracks me up. Well, him and the Mooninites. "Tremble at the site of the Digital Dong!"

As for Beavis and Butthead - has anyone else noticed that President Bush laughs just like them? That wheezy, moronic guffaw?

Michele said...

Wow! I didn't realize that I had such wonderful company in being fans of Ren and Stimpy!!
Thanks Kelli!!

Original Scooby - He is the Dane!

Haven't seen the Tick anywhere anymore...

OK, Who in the WWWof Sports is Aqua Teen hunger..etc...bet that's another cable access show.
Poo....I'm missin' out on so much lately!!

LOL about the Prez's laugh!!!
Nope, never noticed, but I'm gonna' sit up and take notice next time....
You Rock, Kelli!

You know, if they'd show that oral hygene episode in schools....

Wasn't a big watcher of Ren and Stimpy only because my wife hated it, and the kids were more into the Animaniacs.

Brandy said...

Oooh, I forgot about Pinky and the Brain. I used to watch that show with my daughter.

p.s. I never said I liked Beavis and Butthead, I just said I found them moronically funny. As for the President sounding like them.....Hahahahaha! Never noticed before, will have to tell Dh.

Michele said...

Hey there, Crazy Politico!!
You know, you are so right about the Oral Hygeine episode..except some of the humor might scandalize the parents...(even though I bet they'd watch it in their own homes)
It absolutely is effective though. Anyway..thanks for your comment. Always appreciated!!

Brandy! HOW could you forget Pinky and the Brain? *grin*
Hey, hope your day is better than yesterday!!!!
Happy to see you twice in one day!
Woohoo!

Achem.

I LOVED Beavis and Butthead, thankyouverymuch. Yes, I'm quite easy to please. LOL

I dated my husband to them as well. And I still watch them. hehehe

I suppose I should await a proper flogging for my admission. So, get on with it...

Anybody watch the Angry Beavers? Or Real Monsters? Those are great cartoons. :>

Michele said...

OOOH! Angry Beaver...I remember that!!
Been awhile though...gone into hazy space..but yeah..I'm smiling thinkin' about 'em.
Real Monsters??? Now on that one, you have me stumped!

LOL, on the "hehehe"

No flogging here, Mel..Flying Cyber-pies,...but no flogging, *wink*
You are So much fun!!!!

Now that I think of it, Pres. Bush actually laughs like a combo of Beavis and Butthead and Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (Dukes of Hazard). And it's only when he's made a joke that tickles him - you know, the kind that you think is really funny but no one else in the room really gets or finds as amusing as you do.

OMG Michele, I LOVED Ren and Stimpy. My two favorite episodes were the teeth brushing episode you mentioned and the one where they travel to another planet/dimension.

That show was genius.

BTW--Did I tell you a while back that I was Latin major in college? I think so, but I'm not sure.

I used to love Ren and Stimpy. Congrats on the no cavities thing!

Kelli, I told my DH about your interpretation of the Prez's laugh...He LOVED it!!!

Jason...I have them on tape. I LOVE Ren & Stimpy. Did you know that they have R & S now on DVD? I saw it 2 weeks ago...I think that's what reminded me that I had them on VHS from YEARS ago. It's been a blast watching all the first season episodes....

Ooooo, NO , I don't believe I knew that you were a Latin Major in college.
*sheepish ponder*,
Is the phrase right?
I find your major
uber-fascinating!!!

I'll be up front about my Latin.
I recently hooked up with the coolest book
X-TREME LATIN by Henry Beard or as he calls himself,
Henricus Barbatus.
If you really enjoyed Latin and Still do, then, really, I recommend getting this book. You will Laugh Your Socks Off!!!!
Honest!!
Vero, Vero
*grin*

Wow, Kristen, Cats AND Ren and Stimpy!
You are full of `eclat.

BTW-that's French for brilliance or demonstration of approval or acclaim.

Great word for a great person!

Avindair said...

I have to say that the only episode of Ren and Stimpy that I ever connected to was the Don't pee on the electric fence offering. That made me laugh.

Thing is, I associated Ren and Stimpy with a being a college student. That ain't a fun thing, even years later. Back in those days I was working full-time evenings while going to school full-time during the day. My work was solitary and taxing, and my school schedule was grueling. Not a lot of fun there. Because that my idea of a social life was only a few notches above hooting and flinging poo at passing traffic...but that's another story.

I guess my point is that I missed out on about half a decade of TV in the nineties. Ren and Stimpy was just one of those shows.

Michele said...

""hooting and flinging poo at passing traffic..."" ????
I'm almost hesitant to ask... :-)

Re: College, Wow...that sounds like a tough time...you obviously are a dedicated and focused man.

The good thing about these days...DVD's dedicated to nostalgia are big business. If any of these comments spark your interest..as least you know that it can be satisfied....
I'd be interested to hear if you were inspired...
If anything, Ren and Stimpy helps lifts your spirits on less than perfect days....but so too do the Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain.....Truly inspired shows :-)
Thanks for dropping by Avindair!!

Whoa, you hit the comment jackpot with this post Michele! I'll have to check out X-TREME LATIN. It's been thirteen years since I focused on Latin, so I'm getting rusty. A shame, really. I was pretty good at it. I even pondered going to grad school and teaching, but then I saw how many world-class applicants there were for a one year job at my college. Not so practical a profession, I'm afraid.

Michele said...

I AM impressed Jason.
I only took it my senior year in High School .Aced it..straight A's all the way through.
Loved Latin. But...I won't go into how many Yyears THAT has been, LOL!

You know, you're right. I haven't had this many comments in.....well, ever. This has been fun!!

Thanks, Jason!!

Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain were just awesome! Those I managed to see while taking care of the then-infant MonkeyBoy between classes. SpousalUnit and I will still occasionally do this exchange:

Brain: Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinkie?

Pinkie: I think so, Brain, but leather chaps chafe me so.

God, those shows ruled. I miss them.

Michele said...

ROTFL!! Avindair....That is a wonderul and SO Classic P & B moment....
Thanks for giving ME a smile!!

Richard Cosgrove said...

Ren and Stimpy... how I've missed you.

Pinky and the Brain are good, but they're no real substitute.

* sigh * TV's just not the same without those two psychotic whatever-the-hell-they-were and Powered Toast Man.

The BBC used to put on Ren & Stimpy on a 6pm every evening. But then after a couple of years it suddenly stopped, never to be seen again.

I think someone high up in the BBC actually watched an episode and something like this happened:
"Ah, a cartoon. Never seen this before. is that a walking corpse? Nah. Now what is that dog-thing doing to that fat cat?
"...
"HOLY CRAP!!"

Must get round to getting the R&S DVDs.

If they exist yet...

Michele said...

ROTFL!!
Oh, that's funny, Richard!!

But all the more reason to leave it ON!!
Silly BBC... their bad.

And YES, it IS out in DVD...first and second seasons are out so far.
Good luck!!

Richard Cosgrove said...

Sadly the R&S DVDs aren't available in the UK.

Along with other good stuff like House MD, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and Hill Street Blues.

And as Amazon only accepts orders from people with credit cards - even when they want to pay by cheque or cash (which is just frigging bizarre. And an -ism) - I won't be seeing those two psychotic critters on my TV for some time....

Sometimes, reading out of my comfort zone is ... well, uncomfortable. The blurb of the book sounded rather interesting. The Fate of Mercy ...
